The Washington Wizards were created in 1961 and started out as the Chicago Packers, and then one year later changed their team name to the Zephyrs. The team was not successful in Chicago, not making the playoff or having a record over .400, despite having star center Walt Bellamy. In 1963, the team moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Bullets. They advanced to the WCF, their first playoff appearance in 1965, and were slowly improving after that. By 1970, the team finally got some success by having stars Earl "The Pearl" Monroe and Wes Unseld from draft picks. They remained a huge playoff contender in th 70's. The duo made it up to the team's first finals appearance in 1971, but lost to the powerful Milwaukee Bucks who were led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, and Bob Dandridge. Surprisingly, Monroe was traded, but team still did successful with Unseld's presence. In 1972, power foward Elvin Hayes was obtained from the Rockets, and he formed a strong frontcourt with Unseld. The duo led the team to five 1st place finishes in their division in a row, 5 Eastern Conference Semifinals, 3 finals appearances (winning one in 1978), and two 50+ win seasons, all throughout the 70's. By this time, the Bullets, moved to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Bullets. Their star players were aging by 1981, and for the first time in 13 years, the team failed to make the playoffs, as Unseld retired and Hayes was traded to the Rockets. The 80's were a declining period for the team as every time they made the playoffs, they'd get knocked out in the first round. Their only winning season in the 80's was in 1987, notching a 42-40 record. The team fell into another period of mediocrity in the 90's, when they only made the playoffs in 1997. They had also changed the team's name to the Wizards in 1997. Another 7 year playoff drought followed. By 2004, they'd have a stroke of success as they formed a "Big 3" consisting of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, and Caron Butler. They would lead the team to its first playoff appearance in 7 years and a 45-37 record. The team would follow up with 3 more playoff appearances in a row. Things got ugly again as they lost Arenas and Jamison, and as a result, haven't had a winning season since 2009. Their overall record is 1847-2299 (.445). Their best season was their 1974-1975 season where they notched a 60-22 (.732) record, and their worst season was their 1961-1962 season, where they got a 18-62 (.225) record. They've retired 4 jerseys. 10 (Earl Monroe), 11 (Elvin Hayes), 25 (Gus Johnson), and 41 (Wes Unseld).
