The Detroit Pistons were created in 1949 and were originally known as the Fort Wayne Pistons. The Pistons were pretty successful in the early to mid 50's making the NBA Finals two times in a row, losing both of them. The Pistons had a good fanbase in Fort Wayne, but it was much too small to make any real money, so in 1957, the team moved to Detroit. For the next 24 years the Pistons struggled and they were a team everyone forgot about. The team had several stars during this time period like Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Jimmy Walker, and Bob Lanier, but their supporting cast wasn't good enough to achieve any real success. Finally, in 1981 the franchises fourtunes changed when the team drafted point guard Isiah Thomas. Thomas formed the core of the team with Bill Laimbeer and Vinnie Johnson, which they got from trades. By the time Joe Dumars came on board in 1985, the team had established a defense oriented, no nonsense approach to play. For this, they were nicknamed the "Bad Boys". In 1989, they won their first NBA title, when they swept the late "Showtime" Lakers. The next year, they defended their title and won the title against the Clyde Drexler led Portland Trail Blazers. The Pistons started declining shortly after this win, but returned to championship contention by 2002, and won their 3rd title in 2004 against the heavily favored Kobe/Shaq Lakers. They had the chance to defend their title again, but they fell in the ECF to the Miami Heat. They were led by Chauncey Billups and Ben Wallace during this time. Their overall record is 2489-2575 (.492). Their best season was their 2005-2006 season where they got a 64-18 (.780) record, and their worst season was their 1979-1980 season, where they got a 16-66 (.195) record. The Pistons have retired 10 people. 2 (Chuck Daly), 4 (Joe Dumars), 10 (Dennis Rodman), 11 (Isiah Thomas), 15 (Vinnie Johnson), 16 (Bob Lanier), 21 (Dave Bing), 40 (Bill Laimbeer), general manger Jack McCloskey, and owner William Davidson.
