The Atlanta Hawks have moved around more times than any other team except the Sacremento Kings. They've moved to Moline, Illinois, then Milwaukee, St.Louis, and finally settled in Atlanta for the 1968-1969 season. They won their first and only championship in 1958, while they were the St. Louis Hawks, with the trio of Bob Pettit (2x MVP and 2x Scoring Champion), Clyde Lovellette, and Cliff Hagan. This excellent front line in the 60's was second only to the Celtics. By the 70's though, they finally had a good all-around team, including guard "Pistol" Pete Maravich, foward Lou Hudson, and former Rookie of the Year, Walt Bellamy, a center. They were contending once again, but continually succumbed to the Knicks or Celtics. In 1982, Atlanta made one of the most important desicions of its history by trading for superstar Dominique Wilkins. They made the playoffs every year he was playing with them, led them to win 50 or more games a year for four years straight, and for his amazing dunks, he was nicknamed "The Human Highlight Film". Once he left in 1994, the Hawks fell into a period of mediocrity. Their overall record is 2470-2523 (.495). Their best season was their 1986-1987 Wilkins-led team which got 57-25 (.695), and their worst season was their 2004-2005 season where they limped through a 13-69 (.159) season. They have retired four jersey numbers. 9 (Bob Pettit), 21 (Dominique Wilkins), 23 (Lou Hudson), and 40 (Jason Collier).
