The Philadelphia 76ers are one of basketball's most storied franchies and has been around since the 1950's, when they were known as the Syracuse Nationals. The Nationals were a decent team, making 3 finals appearances, and winning 1, while they were led by foward Dolph Schayes. By 1963 though, it was getting apparent that Syracuse was too small to be a real money-making city, so they moved to Philadelphia, filling the void left by the Warriors. In 1964, they obtained Wilt Chamberlain from the Warriors, who led the team to notch their first winning seasons in Philadelphia. 1967 was when the team really shined. With stars Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, and Chet Walker, the team cruised to a 68-13 record, which was the best season any team has even gotten at that point. To sweeten the season, they also took home the NBA championship title. After that season, the team started rapidly decling. I mean, they still got 50+ wins the next two seasons. But things got real ugly by 1973. At that point, Chamberlain and Walker were gone, and the team suffered badly, getting a 9-73 record. By 1977, they were back on track, having obtained former ABA stars George McGinnis and Julius Erving. The duo led the team to a finals appearance in 1977, but lost to the Trail Blazers. Another finals appearance was made in 1980 and 1982, but 76ers lost both to the Magic Johnson led Lakers. Finally in 1983, the last piece of the "championship puzzle" was completed in 1983 when Moses Malone joined the team. They breezed through the playoffs that year, going 12-1. In the finals, the team was facing the Lakers again. This time, the team made mockery out of them when they swept them. The team remained competitive throughout the rest of the 80's, with veterans Erving and Malone, joined with Charles Barkley. Barkley was traded to the Suns in 1992, and by that time Malone had been traded and Erving had retired. The team suddenly spiraled downward, not winning more than 30 games until 1998. All those bad seasons amounted to good draft picks though, and the team selected Allen "The Answer" Iverson as the #1 pick in 1996. He led the team to a finals appearance in 2001, the team's first in 18 years, but they ended up losing to the Lakers. The 76ers had a few more winning seasons after that, with Iverson complimented with second scoring option Andre Iguodala. Their overall record is 2657-2345 (.531). Their best season was their 1966-1967 season where they got a smooth 68-13 (.840) record, which is still the third best record of all time, and their worst season came 6 years later, as they slumped to a 9-73 (.110) record. They've retired 8 jerseys and a microphone. 2 (Moses Malone), 6 (Julius Erving), 10 (Maurice Cheeks), 13 (Wilt Chamberlain), 15 (Hal Greer), 24 (Bobby Jones), 32 (Billy Cunningham), 34 (Charles Barkley), and a microphone for P.A.
