The Orlando Magic were one of the four teams created in the 1989-1990 season. They began as a sub-.400 team in its early days, led by Dennis Scott, Scott Skiles, and Nick Anderson. Injuries hampered most of the roster though, and with barely any healthy players, the Magic struggled badly, racking up a 17 game losing streak. But that all changed in 1992 when they selected franchise cornerstone Shaquille O'Neal with the first pick. He helped the team to a 41-41 record his first season, improving by 20 wins. Then in 1993, with the least chance of getting the first pick, they got it again. This time they selected Chris Webber, but immediately traded him to the Golden State Warriors for point guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway. The one-two punch of Hardaway and O'Neal led the team to a franchise best 50-32 record and they took second place in their division. Things got better for them in the 1994-1995 season when the team aquired All-Star Horace Grant from the Chicago Bulls. This trio racked up a 57-25 record, took first place in their division and conference, and made it to the NBA finals for the first time. Unfourtunately, they got swept 4 games to none by the Rockets. The next season, they took first place in their division again, and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Michael Jordan was back from retirement though, and they got swept by the Bulls 4 games to none. In 1996, O'Neal left for the Lakers, and Hardaway suffered the first of a long series of injuries and was never the same player again. Until 2000, the team was full of no name players, but yet they always won more than half of their games. The Magic got lucky again when they obtained two top free agents, Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady. However, Hill was injured and couldn't play more than 30 games until 2004, but McGrady was turning into an All-Star. McGrady was good, but the team still struggled in the post season, losing in the first round 3 years in a row. McGrady was traded, but then the Magic got the number 1 pick in 2004, which turned out to be Dwight Howard. The team also aquired Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick, but it still was not enough to make it far in the post season. The Magic finally picked up the slack in 2007 by taking first in their division and winning 50+ games. They accomplished this for the next three years, too, even making another finals, but losing in 5 games. Their overall record is 967-891 (.520). Their best season was their 1995-1996 season where they got 60-22 (.732) and their worst season was their 1989-1990 season, where they got 18-64 (.220). They have retired one number. 6 (For the fans.).
